Can you help Sarah regain her independence and fight Moyamoya?
Sarah ‘Shin’ Higgins is a fighter with an unstoppable spirit. Before being diagnosed with Moyamoya in 2023 after suffering multiple strokes, she was the funniest person in the room and dedicated her life to creating out-of-this world food and giving back to her community the best way she knew how – through pizza. Volunteering with the 1K Pizza Project, Sarah toured food banks and community centres, feeding and teaching those in need. In her words, “Just cuz you’re hard up doesn’t mean you should be on Fray Bentos and baked beans for’t rest of your life”.
Moyamoya is a rare, progressive disease that restricts blood flow to the brain. Despite undergoing major brain surgery, the disease advanced, and in March 2024, at just 44-years-old, Sarah endured multiple severe strokes, seizures, and a brain bleed. Doctors prepared us for the worst—but Sarah fought back and hasn’t stopped fighting since.
Now, she needs us to fight with her.
The strokes have affected both sides of her brain, causing very limited movement, high muscle tone, communication and cognitive difficulties. After nine months in hospitals, she’s now home, working tirelessly to regain mobility and independence. NHS rehab is limited, so her family has funded private physiotherapy, and she’s making small but incredible progress each week. The goal? Regain arm function to restore some independence.
Private physiotherapy doesn’t come cheap, but the difference it is making to Sarah’s life is priceless. Any donation, big or small, will help raise funds for additional one to one physiotherapy and, one day, adaptations to Sarah’s home so she can live as fully and independently as possible.
Sarah deserves her life back, let's help get her there together!
