My name is Robert. After three decades working in Africa and Asia, I retired in Cambodia 10 years ago.
As too few people realise because of poor Western media coverage, Cambodia has been extensively bombed by Thai F16 bombs, rockets and mortars during the three weeks of armed conflict last December.
600000 rural Cambodians were displaced, of which 2/3 were able to return home under he current ceasefire. However, thousands of families remain stuck in the IDP settlements near various Pagodas because their houses were completely destroyed.
I have met two such families, counting a total of 20 people, from babies to grandmothers. Their houses were located respectively 10 and 20km away from the Thai border, which makes it even harder to comprehend why they were targeted during this so-called border conflict. Both farmer families have built up their homes bit by bit over decades. There is no way they can rebuild them now by their own means.
I have offered to try and collect 5000 usd for each family. I commit to matching the amount collected here from my own funds. I will report on progress once we have enough cash in hand to allow them to get started. And you will be welcome to meet them when you come visiting our wonderful country !
