Help Zeus get going again? Please read all.

There was a tragic accident in the early morning of October 7 that led to 14 month old Zeus getting shot and losing his leg.

Both the shooter and the dog's owner understand that this was a heartbreaking misunderstanding, and they have spoken. The most fearless and devoted pet owner I know says she would have misread the situation the same way and, if armed, could easily have done the same thing.

There is no effort to place blame here--only a recognition that one of our neighbors has a dog beloved by the family, including an 14 year old boy, and that beloved dog suddenly requires expensive veterinary care.

While the goal number may appear high, it is a reasonable approximation of what the expenses will be after follow-up care from the surgery and rehab. If more is collected than needed for Zeus' bills, it will be donated to the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society to care for other animals in need.

Every bit counts--even $1 or $5. It shows this family what it means to live in this community, and any amount will make a real difference to their ability to give the dog they love the care he needs.

Please see more about Zeus' story and the family that love him below.

A BIT ABOUT ZEUS FROM HIS FAMILY

My family got Zeus when he was only 6 weeks 13 months ago because both my wife and I lost our grandmothers and we thought it would help relieve our grieving and our son's.

When Zeus first arrived at the house, my family fell in love with him. He couldn't replace our grandmothers, but he was just what we needed--he came in spreading love and kisses to all of us!

As months passed, Zeus ate A LOT and grew bigger. We walked him three times a day all through the neighborhood. He is such a good dog and the neighbors welcomed him as this big, kind, good-looking dog.

Our family loves him so much that, at 14 months, he practically runs the house. He sleeps in our beds, sits on the couches, and chases our cat all through the house.

He's also very young--just 14 months--which is still a puppy. He's just a biiiggg puppy!

Early on our morning walk, Zeus jerked his leash out of my hands to chase a squirrel. Unfortunately, he then ran at another neighborhood dog. Fearing for himself and his dog, the other owner shot Zeus 4x.

We are so grateful that Zeus is alive, but Zeus had to get his leg amputated and there is rehab ahead.

We are certain he will adjust and have a happy life as he is so full of love.
