What is the Can I Be Vulnerable (C.I.B.V) Mobile Mental Health Bus?
Can I Be Vulnerable?” Mobile will be a service business providing mobile mental health care to under-served, low-income, and communities of color in the City of Los Angeles.
Can I Be Vulnerable?” the web series started as a safe and brave space where black men were given the opportunity to share their mental and emotional health journeys by telling a seldom-told story with the world, without judgment.
As mental health and suicide are under-publicized in the African American community "Can I Be Vulnerable?" emerged, as a simple expression of one man’s story that has transcended into a web series, featuring familiar faces and the everyday man. To expand on the work C.I.B.V. has done on camera comes a mobile mental health unit that will travel to different communities offering quality mental health care; To promote the well-being of the individuals and families in the communities we serve by providing easy access to care within reasonable walking and/or driving distance.
I started C.I.B.V. because
I lost my mother to alcoholism as a teen and as a young adult my older brother to suicide. With both losses taking a toll on my mental and emotional health, and after being introduced to therapy through couples counseling, I began my mental health journey. I was compelled to share my story, and I started with social media. posting what is now the first episode of Can I Be Vulnerable (#CIBV). Check out our IG here .
I did this to disrupt the common and often false narratives surrounding black manhood and mental/emotional health, #CIBV is now a series that invites men to share their stories - the good, the bad, and the ugly transparently and without judgment. Your donation would help me connect teens with services in environments where they feel safe.
Here's Our Progress
Thanks to the mental health department at LAUSD, I was able to move the work of C.I.B.V forward with the school curriculum based on the series’ episodes. The curriculum is currently being piloted at Jefferson High in South Central L.A. The purpose of the curriculum is to introduce the terms "Therapy", "Mental Health", & "Vulnerability. By exposing them to the content of themes and or people from similar backgrounds to theirs.
