The Walker Scouting Memorial Committee has announced that a fundraising campaign is now underway to restore the carillon chimes at Walker Memorial Garden in North Brookfield’s Walnut Grove Cemetery.

The project involves replacing the carillon chimes equipment and speakers with programmable state-of-the-art technology, encasing the new system in a vapor-proof box, restoring the electrical network that powers the system, and adding overnight lighting to the memorial and the flagpole.

Contributions from area Scouters, North Brookfield residents, local businesses, and anyone with an interest in the project are welcome and encouraged. Please be sure to leave a note if you are making your donation in honor of a departed Scouter or community member, or if you are donating as a tribute to someone. Donations to the campaign will be acknowledged in the program for the 2023 Scouting Memorial Service.

All donations will be held in an account with North Brookfield Savings Bank and any funds remaining after the project is fully funded will be turned over to the Town Treasurer to be used for perpetual care of the Walker Memorial Garden.

Walker Memorial Garden was designed and constructed by Norman Walker to honor the memory of his son, Ronald, and was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 25, 1970. As a boy, Ron was active in Troop 128, chartered to St. Joseph’s Church in North Brookfield. Because both father and son shared a love for Scouting and because Scouting had brought them so close to one another, the idea for a “Living Memorial to Scouting” was born.

The original memorial included a beautiful set of carillon chimes that were set into motion every time a visitor passed into the Memorial Garden. Sadly, weather and time took their toll on the carillon and the chimes have been silent for many years.

We have taken on this project with the approval and cooperation of the Walnut Grove Cemetery Commission, in memory of Mr. Walker and the legacy he left for all local Scouters, and for the benefit of all North Brookfield residents who recall the beautiful and comforting music that used to radiate from the Walker Memorial Garden.
