My name is Federico Cruz, and I’m reaching out with humility and hope.

After serving 30 years in prison for a violent crime I committed as a teenager, I was released with a renewed heart and a passion for restoration. While incarcerated, I earned my bachelor’s degree in Faith and Community Leadership with a minor in Social Work through the Calvin Prison Initiative.

Now, I am working towards earning a Master’s degree in Social Work at Calvin University—a program that would prepare me to serve others through restorative justice, community development, and support for those coming home from incarceration.

But I’m facing serious challenges.

Despite my education, I’ve struggled to find employment due to the weight of my past. Employers often turn me away, and without work, I cannot afford the costs of applying to graduate school—let alone tuition, books, or living expenses while I continue searching for a job.

This GoFundMe campaign is a step of faith. I’m asking for support to help cover:

• Graduate school application fees

• Transcripts and materials required for admission

• Early tuition costs if I’m accepted

• Books and school supplies

• Basic living costs during this period of transition

I don’t take this ask lightly. My goal is not just to get a degree—it’s to become a servant leader, helping others find purpose after prison and advocating for healing and accountability. I live every day with remorse for what I did and a commitment to live differently moving forward.
