3 peaks challenge for PSC support!
My brother Tom has recently being diagnosed with a very rare liver disease called PSC (primary sclerosing cholangitis). It a chronic liver disease where the bile ductsboth inside and outside the liver progressively narrow due to inflammation, this means bile cannot flow properly, and so it accumulates in the liver and can eventually cause damage to liver cells.
Currently, the cause for PSC remains unknown, it is suggested it is an immune-mediated disease and may be due to genetic factors. Therefore people with this genetic makeup might be sensitive to environmental factors that trigger their immune system to ‘attack’ their bile ducts.
The latest figures show that only 80 in one million people in the UK have PSC.
The symptoms of PSC are: jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes), itchy skin and extreme tiredness.
Currently there is no cure for PSC. Blockages within the bile ducts can be treated with a procedure called ERCP where they can dilate the bile ducts, or place a stent in the bile ducts to hold them open. Tomhas had this procedure done however it may only be a temporary fix.
The only known treatment known to cure PSC is having a liver transplant, which is highly likely Tom will require and has had all the checks done ready for this.
More money needs to be raised so that vital research can be done into the disease to help find treatments for patients.
Myself, Charlotte Ben and Maddy are doing the Yorkshire 3 peaks challenge in August 2020 in order to fundraiser for this charity!!
I'm raising money in aid of PSC Support and every donation will help. Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.
