Thank you for taking the time to click on the link!
Camp Ohana Foundation is an organisation founded 2008 in rural Kenya promoting leadership and global connections for local children – 100x 5-14 years olds – children are given the chance to explore new skills through arts, education and cultural exchange. I plan to provide the skills, knowledge and materials to allow the children to produce their own visual story through photography. I will be documenting the children and their efforts through my own photography. The theme of their story telling is what makes them happy, gives them hope and what means the most to them.
Camp Ohana is a learning hub for children in surrounding villages. Various volunteers visit the camp give their time for the children to learn a new skill and connect to a wider audience.
A ballet school form the United States is visiting the week before me, I hope my workshops will be as fun!
Grace, my 10 year old daughter will be documenting her story at home in Glasgow and presenting this to the children at Camp Ohana as an example and she has been asked by her school to present her experience upon return. Grace is the first child to visit Camp Ohana.
Upon arrival to Camp Ohana I will be giving a talk about photography and how it connects us all. How a photograph can capture a moment, create a feeling and tell a story. I will be advising the children how to tell an interesting and emotive story using their disposable camera. I will be having the films processed afew days later and each child will have an album of their story to keep, share with others. On my return to Glasgow I will be making a photo book of the project which will be printed and sent to Camp Ohana for their newly completed library.
Who will benefit? The Children at Camp Ohana will learn new skills and will understand visual story telling having had this experience, they will also have the albums to keep in their newly built library. The project connects the children globally to others, and shares their story and the final product can be used to generate future funding for the Camps education programme.
The similar ages of the children at the camp and at home allows them to compare their life in Glasgow with the children from Camp Ohana. Im sure there will be many differences, but I'm sure will there also be similarities.
Upon our return we are planning to exhibit the images and share our story.
There are plans for 4 local exhbitions from which the community will also benefit. One being Notredame Primary, with almost 500 children at the school this exhibiton brings cross cultural connections and raises awareness of life in a rural Kenyan village.
So what am I fund rasing for?
100x Disposable cameras
2x Processing
Scanning of aprox 3,600 images
100x Albums for the Children to keep
A contribution of £10 buys 1 camera and processing, £4.50 buys a camera - even the smallest contributions will make a difference.
Self funded - flights, accomodation, travel within Kenya. In addtional I am also self funding exhibition side of the project which is esitmated at £1300.
We are leaving at the end of March and so are hoping we will have any funds by the end of February to make sure we can purchase everything we need on time...and to plan for not reaching our goal!...but we are feeling hopeful :)
I have never worked on such a big project from conception to exhibition and I am feeling the pressure of deadlines, the logistics and everything else that comes with it! However, its has been a career and personal goal of mine for many years to do something good with my camera and to have Grace involved is amazing! The support would mean so much so us and the children of Camp Ohana.
We are extermely grateful for all donations of any amount, and for sharing our project information with others.
As a thank you for your donation we have afew amazing prizes which have been generously donated -Donations of £10 or more will be entered into the draw - Draw date to be confirmed for a date in March.
