With a heavy heart I’m writing this message on behalf of my brother, Matt Garrahy, Sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Garrahy and their children Emma and Nolan.
Earlier this year my brother Matt and his family moved into what they had described to us as their “dream home."
Last Thursday they went through their morning routine and went to work and school like any other day. By the time any sense of danger arose it was too late. The fast moving fires forced road closures that kept the Garrahys from returning home and just like that everything that they had driven away from earlier that day was gone. And they were homeless.
“We're safe and together. It’s just stuff." Matt speaks of how important that is. "So many people have it worse, they've lost their loved ones. We are lucky to have the support of family nearby and a great community."
Right now the Garrahys face a mountain of uncertainty and obligation as they try to imagine the task of rebuilding their lives and creating a new home wherever that might be.
I’m so looking forward to the day that they can sit back and say, “it’s great to be home." The Garrahys as well as the astonishing number of other's who've lost their homes and worse.
Obviously money won't get that feeling back but maybe contributing just a little might be a way that we can show support and hope we help get them back to "home" a little quicker.
------
As a side note: During the fire, Matt and Mary Ellen helped those that they could by giving rides to shelter. After the fire Mary Ellen met an elderly woman who had also lost her home. When she heard her story she took her to her mom's house for a shower and warm meal. Shen then managed to secure her a place to live.
AND! Emma performed in a concert to benefit the fire victims just hours after finding out that she was one of the fire victims herself. She courageously took the stage and rocked it!
Matt, Mary Ellen, Emma and Nolan, you are in our thoughts and we can not imagine how hard it must be to go through all of this and if there were any way we could lift all of this from your shoulders we would.
Love, Erin, Stan, Dylan & Lily
