Camán Ciarán

The letters TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) didn’t mean much to the Moore family in 2021, but by 27th December their world had been turned upside down by it. On a Christmas night out with family and friends, Ciarán was the victim of an unprovoked coward punch which resulted in devastating and life changing consequences for him and his family.

Already in a coma by time he reached the ER, for many hours Doctors were unsure if Ciaran would make it. The miraculous hand at BMC were forced to intubate and perform an emergency Craniotomy where surgeons removed a part of Ciarán’s skull in an attempt to reduce the impact of the swelling. Telling his family there was a high chance he would be in a vegetative state, if he even survived.

After two months in and out of the ICU he was eventually stable enough to be transferred to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. A place of many miracles. It has been a bumpy road to say the least, progress has not been linear. For months it was one step forward and two steps back. But there has been progress. Ciarán finally got discharged and was well enough to come home June 14th 2022. He requires around the clock care right now, he cannot be left home alone, he has limited mobility on his left side of his body. He cannot use his left arm or hand, he has intense pain on that side of the body. He is learning to walk again, learning to do so many things all over again. Cognitively Ciarán has issues with short term memory, speech, and impulsivity. His eye sight has been impaired. But every day brings a little progress and he is truly thriving at home. Now off tube feeds, he is definitely making up for 5 months of missing meals, catching up on so much lost time with Eve, Emme and Micheál. Through the kindness and generosity of his friends, family and community his house was modified to meet his needs. One thing that is evident is just how many good people are out there. So grateful to have so many in his corner.

There is no norm when it comes to a TBI, every single one is different, every recovery and outcome differs. Ciarán still has a long way to go, he will need long term therapy and care. But he is here, and ready to do it, setting goals and accomplishing them. We don’t doubt for a second he has what is takes to get back his independence and we will be with him every step of the way.

If you wish to donate to help on this journey that was forced upon his family it would be much appreciated as would your prayers and good wishes.

Faith in God and strength of family conquers all.
