At Caminamos Juntos we work to integrate Mexican, deported individuals and their families into the San Miguel de Allende community. Each family faces unique challenges and we strive to connect them with resources which allow them to reintegrate.
Sending a child to public school is expensive and can put a tremendous amount of strain on recently deported families. Schools require families to purchase basic supplies for their child`s education, including uniforms, notebooks, pencils, backpacks and more.
In addition to enrolling their children in school our participants are working to establish a livelihood and find employment, however this is a long term process and school is just around the corner.
Jose is a 10 year old that arrived in San Miguel de Allende in June. His father was deported in April after living for 20 years in the US and Jose and his mom have recently come to join him in Mexico. Jose has never been to Mexico and speaks very little Spanish. He is supposed to start at his neighborhood school next month but his family is struggling to buy basic school supplies. Since his mom is a US citizen, she is unable to obtain a mexican work visa and his family is currently living off of one paycheck. They are struggling to sustain themselves without the added expenses. Attending school will allow Jose to make friends, learn Spanish and integrate into the community.
Jose and his family are just one of the 6 families that are relying on Caminamos Juntos to help ease the transition to school this fall. As part of the services that Caminamos Juntos provides, we assist families in obtaining correct documentation in order to enroll in public schools. In the next two weeks we are looking to raise $2000 USD so that our families will have the means to prepare their kids for school, which begins on August 26th.
Please support Caminamos Juntos by helping us raise funds for school supplies for our families. Education is key to community involvement and will connect these families to San Miguel and to adapt to their new lives. Any size donation helps.
Warmly,
The Caminamos Juntos Team.
