Alessandra nació con espasticidad debido a su prematurez en el nacimiento. Nació con tan sólo 28 semanas de gestación. Tiene mas de 8 años luchando diariamente para tener una vida normal como cualquier otro niño.
Desde bebé, ha estado en terapia física en diversas clínicas e instituciones. Lamentablemente, la terapia no es suficiente para minimizar el daño causado por la parálisis cerebral, la cual ha afectado su motricidad. A sus casi 8 años, Alessandra presenta daño irreversible en ambos lados de la cadera (el lado derecho presenta un 30% de daño y el izquierdo un 25%)
Para evitar que el daño siga perjudicando a Alessandra, se necesita una cirugía (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy) para reducir el problema permanentemente. En El Salvador y en Centroamérica no existe un Hospital que realice este procedimiento. En el mundo, son pocos los hospitales que tienen el equipo necesario y los médicos capacitados para este tipo de cirugía. El St. Louis Children’s Hospital, es uno de los hospitales que puede realizar esta operación. Alessandra ya fue evaluada y aceptada como candidata ideal para esta operación.
La cirugía de rizotomía dorsal selectiva (SDR) es un procedimiento que trata la espasticidad muscular causada por la comunicación anormal entre el cerebro, la médula espinal, los nervios y los músculos. Corrige la espasticidad muscular al cortar las raicillas nerviosas en la médula espinal que están enviando señales anormales a los músculos.
La cirugía SDR es un tratamiento para la parálisis cerebral, que típicamente se realiza en niños que se ven afectados por la espasticidad. Estamos recaudando fondos a traves de gofundme, los cuales seran retirados por Krista Quintanilla Noriega; tia de Alessandra.

It corrects muscle spasticity by cutting the nerve rootlets in the spinal cord that are sending abnormal signals to the muscles.
