Cameroonian AI Students Support

In this technological age, we are witnessing great advances in our standard of living, we have access to information and resources that were once inconceivable. Within this age, the emergence of the field of Artificial Intelligence has provided us with tools to solve problems that were traditionally understood to be challenging. The techniques developed in this field have applications in a wide array of fields, spanning from health care to agriculture.
As an African, one can only imagine the possible impact that this technology might have within our continent. However, evidently we lack human resources in this field, as the representation of African researchers and scientists are scarce, more specifically those from French-Speaking Africa, which is of particular concern. Taking into consideration that French-Speaking African countries fall within the lower echelons of the GDP bracket across the continent (None make the Top 10).
Motivated by this disparity, myself and a few colleagues of mines who work within this space set out to establish a 3-day workshop in Cameroon entitled Deep Learning IndabaX Centrafrique. The aim was to educate students on the basics and similarly to provide a platform for researchers within the country to share their work and their interests. The event was a success as we were urged for another workshop in the following year (The event is pictured above). The event was fully sponsored by the generous Deep Learning Indaba organization, which is arguably the biggest summer school on Artificial Intelligence in the African continent.
During our time in Cameroon, we urged students and academics alike to apply for the Deep Learning Indaba 2019 in Stellenbosch, South Africa given that at this summer school they'll have access to some of the most brilliant minds in the field and will similarly have an opportunity to demonstrate their brilliance and ingenuity.
Of those that applied, two Cameroonian students had been admitted to the week long summer school in September but were unfortunate enough not to have received any sponsorship towards flights or accommodation. We feel indebted to these students as they showed so much promise during our time in Cameroon, Irene Tema who actually helped us design our advert poster for our workshop and Yvan Wamba who was extremely engaging during our talks, asking very interesting questions.
Within our own capacity, we have made provisions for accommodation and visa costs, however the cost of flights is beyond our capacity. Hence, we are calling upon the community to help us sponsor these brilliant students.
Your contribution, in any form, would be greatly appreciated.
Given the volatility of flight costs, we estimated that the cost sums up to approx. $1450.

À notre époque, nous assistons à de grands progrès dans notre niveau de vie, nous avons accès à des informations et à des ressources qui étaient inconcevables. Aujourd'hui, l’émergence du domaine de l’Intelligence Artificielle nous a fourni des outils traditionnellement compris comme des défis. Les techniques développées dans ce domaine couvrent un large éventail de domaines allant des soins de santé à l'agriculture.
En tant qu'Africain, on ne peut qu'imaginer l'impact possible de cette technologie sur notre continent. Cependant, il est évident que nous manquons de ressources humaines dans ce domaine, car la représentation des chercheurs et des scientifiques africains est rare, en particulier celle de l’Afrique francophone, qui est particulièrement préoccupante. Considérant que les pays africains francophones se situent dans les échelons inférieurs de la fourchette du PIB sur le continent (aucun ne figure parmi les 10 premiers).
Motivés par cette problème, moi-même et quelques de mes collègues qui travaillent dans cet espace, nous nous sommes lancés dans une conférence de trois jours au Cameroun intitulé Deep Learning IndabaX Centrafrique. L'objectif était d'éduquer les étudiants sur les bases et, de même, de fournir une plateforme aux chercheurs du pays pour partager leur travail et leurs intérêts. L'événement a été un succès puisque nous avons été invités à une autre conférence l'année suivante (l'événement est illustré ci-dessus). L'événement a été entièrement parrainé par la généreuse organisation Deep Learning Indaba, qui est sans doute la plus grande école d'été sur l'intelligence artificielle du continent africain.
Pendant notre séjour au Cameroun, nous avons exhorté les étudiants et les universitaires à postuler pour le Deep Learning Indaba 2019 à Stellenbosch, en Afrique du Sud, étant donné qu’ils auront accès à certains des personnalités les plus brillantes de cette école d’été, une occasion de démontrer leur éclat et leur ingéniosité.
Parmi ceux qui ont postulé, deux étudiants camerounais ont été admis à la grande école d’été de septembre mais ont eu le malheur de ne recevoir aucune bourse pour les voyages ou un hébergement. Nous nous sentons redevables à ces étudiants car ils ont montré tant de promesses durant notre séjour au Cameroun, Irene Tema, qui nous a aidés à concevoir notre affiche publicitaire pour notre conférence et Yvan Wamba qui était extrêmement engagé lors de nos entretiens, posant des questions très intéressantes.
En notre qualité, nous avons prévu des frais d’hébergement et de visa, mais le coût des vols dépasse notre capacité. Par conséquent, nous appelons la communauté à nous aider à parrainer ces brillants étudiants.
Votre contribution, sous quelque forme que ce soit, serait grandement appréciée.
