The Cameron Peak Fire, Colorado largest fire, not only devastated 200,000 plus acres of forest and hundreds of structures in its path. That same flame also claimed the properties of Joe and Myke Hoffman on Crystal Mountain Road. The family bought their property in 1973, originally purchased by their late father and his mother. Building originally the Blue Moon lodge and the Analemma later in 2006.
The family has put in over half a centuries of blood sweat and tears into building these weekend get aways off the grid where, for generations, they would escape the busy hustle of pandemic stricken city life and enjoy the solitude of the nature. Often enjoyed with the relatives and friends from both near and far. The isolation of this escape ended up being just out side of comfort when the largest wild fire in Colorado history claimed the family’s property and the two structures that hold so many memories of shared times together with the people they love. Due to the location of the cabins, being excluded from maintained roads and power sources, made it less accessible for fire fighters to combat the fire.
After the fire, lies only the remains of cement footings and scrap metal burnt to a crisp, barely recognizable. Every hand milled piece of wood collected from the surrounding beetle kill, that once offered support and protection from the elements, was only a smokey remembrance of the families hard work and cherished memories. In the mist of the smoke, that hadn’t even cleared yet, rose hope in the first light a rebuild as Joe looked up and sought the future of what lies in from of him.
Starting from scratch once again 50 years later, the family is letting hope and faith lead the idea of a new escape, this time doing it better and more perfect than before. There was no insurance on the properties as they were outside of coverage guidelines by the insurance companies, due to the restriction of the maintenance of utilities. The family is starting from scratch as they are planning to begin the rebuild at the start of where it all began 50 years ago, in the still standing foundation of the Blue Moon lodge. Turning it into a sleeping bunker as they break ground at the new site of their homes away from home.
Thru the darkness of the Cameron Peak fire, the Hoffman’s need all the help that can get as they begin the journey. From cleaning up rubble to hauling up lumber, to sharing a beer around warm fire, the Hoffman’s have an awaiting adventure ahead of them and could use any bit of help along the way. Volunteers or donations are greatly appreciated!! So anyone who has every shared the breathe taking views of Crystal Mountain, the complying of supplies to build the perfect fort, enjoyed the fresh mountain air at the top of the quary, or shared a scary story around the campfire, this REBUILD starts with your help!!
