Recently, Cameron Gelowitz had a life altering accident that resulted in a broken L1 vertebrae. Through surgery, doctors have fused 5 vertebrae together and decompressed the spinal cord. At this time, Cameron has some feeling in parts of his legs. His left leg is the stronger of the two, with limited sensation in his foot. The right foot has no sensation at this time, with sensations felt on his quad above his knee. There is limited sensation up the back of his right leg up to, and including, his glutes.
Cameron and His brother, Riley, were taking turns on the trampoline at their mom's house, practicing flips and spins that they had done hundreds of times. However, this time around, the trampoline was slightly damp which caused Cameron's feet to slip at the onset of one of his tricks. Cameron knew he was in trouble the moment he felt his feet go out from underneath him due to the slippery tarp.
To say the least, this accident has been devastating for Cameron and his family. Cameron was taken, by ambulance, to Kamloops Hospital where he was initially assessed, then air lifted to Vancouver General Hospital hours later for emergency surgery by the some of the best spinal surgeons in the world. According to the doctors, the surgery for this type of injury is not intended to undo the damage that was done so that life can return to normal (such as a broken arm). The purpose of the surgery is to re-align, and stabilize, the spinal chord and vertebrae so that Cameron could begin rehabilitation as soon as possible. The rehabilitation process, in Vancouver, is expected to take 10 to 12 weeks at GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre in Vancouver. From there, Cameron's continued recovery will be at home in Kamloops. Cameron's positivity and determination through all of this has been infectious as our family and friends gather around him in this journey.
This GoFundMe has been created for those who would like to help Cameron, and his family, in the form of a small donation. There will be many financial pressures placed upon Jody and his family as they travel between Kamloops and Vancouver on a weekly basis to be with Cameron. As they do not yet know the full extent of what recovery will look like, there will likely be additional expenses, in the future, which are required to adjust to a new lifestyle when Cameron comes home.
What your donations would be used for:
1) Food, Accommodation, and Travel expenses for Jody to go back and forth from Kamloops to Vancouver to support Cameron.
2) Medical expenses that may not be covered between now and the time Cameron is able to come home.
3) Medical Equipment for Cameron as needed.
4) Any extra would be donated to a charity of Cameron's choice.
So please, if you are wondering what you can do for Cameron and his family at this time, consider donating. It doesn't have to be much. Every dollar makes a difference, and would be greatly appreciated.
Our sincere thanks goes out to those who have reached out in these trying times.
Our thoughts and hearts are with Cameron and his family.
