Cameras for Photography @ UrbanPromise Los Angeles

Starting a photography program at Urban Promise in Camden had always been a dream of mine. Unfortunately, living in Brooklyn at the time, being more than 90 miles away meant that I would not be there in person to teach the youth about photography and how life changing it can be. When I moved to LA in 2016 I realized that it was the one dream I hadn’t been able to see through. That all changed when UrbanPromise Los Angeles officially launched in July 2019 as an affiliate of UrbanPromise International. 

I immediately reached out to Urban Promise Founder Bruce Main who connected me with Dionté, the Executive Director and co-founder of UPLA. Dionte invited me to come check out the program in their first ever Summer Camp in Canoga Park and naturally my camera came with me. I captured some of the fun and laughter and immediately felt connected to the youth and the incredible program that Dionte created for them. UPLA is carrying on the mission and great work of reaching kids in under-resourced neighborhoods and working to raise them up to be leaders who impact their community and change the world.

The kids seemed to really enjoy the camera and had countless questions for me about photography. Seeing their interest in photography and knowing how life changing it has been for me personally, I knew I couldn’t let the opportunity to share that knowledge pass me by for a second time. Dionte and I spoke over the coming weeks and decided that a photography program at UPLA would be a perfect fit in helping provide the youth in Canoga Park with an outlet for creativity, perspective and job skills that help them on their path to becoming young adults full of promise. It is with great joy that I can officially announce the start of UPLA’s Photography Program, a weekly class, where I will share my knowledge and passion for photography with the leaders of tomorrow. It is my goal to raise $3,000 to fully fund the start of this program which will allow us to purchase 5 Canon M50 mirrorless digital cameras with lenses to be kept at UPLA and utilized by the youth.
