Caitlin and Cameron Carey were expecting their first child, Camden Isaiah in May 2017. At 24 weeks, Camden was diagnosed with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). Since the diagnosis, Cameron and Caitlin were having to drive 3.5 hours from their home in West Plains, MO to Children's Hospital in St. Louis to see specialists on a regular basis in addition to regular check ups in West Plains. Caitlin was expected to be induced at 39 weeks in St. Louis. However, Caitlin's water broke April 21 and they then drove to St Louis. She was admitted in the early morning hours April 22. Caitlin spent the next 24+ hours in labor until doctors finally made the decision to take Camden by C-section. Camden was born at 6:51 am on Sunday, April 23 weighing 7 lbs 8 oz. After being stabilized in the OR, he was taken immediately to Children's NICU. About 24 hours after birth, his blood gas levels had dropped and doctors decided Camden needed to go on ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation). ECMO is a life-saving technique that mimics the natural function of the heart and lungs, allowing an infant or child to rest while natural healing of the affected organs takes place. On April 25, Camden was then strong enough to receive his surgery to repair the diaphragm and place the organs where they are supposed to be. All of his organs except the liver were above the diaphragm. Baby Camden seems to be on the road to recovery (all thanks to God), but still has a long journey ahead of him. Doctors expect Camden will stay in the hospital 8 to 12 weeks. Cameron and Caitlin will be living in St. Louis until they can take baby Camden home. Medical bills are already coming in and there will be much more to come, plus living expenses while in St. Louis, and travel expenses for years after Camden is born to travel back and forth to St. Louis for check-ups. Cameron and Caitlin could definitely use your help to pay for all the needed medical/travel expenses. Thanks for anything you can donate. Also, please respect the privacy of the family during these difficult times. We ask that you refrain from calling or texting Cameron and Caitlin at this time, because every minute of their time is being spent with their precious baby Camden. Thanks!
