Trusted old friends are capable of providing immense comfort… just as much as they’re capable of divulging rotten memories and shameful secrets.
To what extent is obscuring the truth an act of protection?
DIRECTOR’S NOTE
I wrote Cambio as a testament to the remarkable ways that friends, family, and lovers influence our identities, determine our morality, and test the limits of our tolerance. As platonic social contracts are often ill-defined, enduring sincere friendships require continuous redress and affection. The characters in Cambio are reckoning with the principles of interpersonal loyalty in the contexts of class divide, grief and queer culture.
STYLE AND TONE
Cambio, meaning ‘exchange’, is a 52-card party game relying on opportune betrayals between players. The film captures a moneyed pair of twins and their enduring cohort as they spend a summer evening contesting their intellect over card games and abundant intoxication. In due time, residual friction and revelations of deceit erupt into pandemonium as an unexpected plus one finds himself captive to the careening mania of his hosts.
Rife with deadpan humor and authentic dialogue, the screenplay is an ode to my affection for Fitzgeraldian dynamics, platonic intimacy, and biblical allegories.
It is the blood that makes an atonement for the soul.
