Cam vs. The Universe: Car Repair Arc

Hi everyone! I’m Cameron/cometclysm. Life has been especially difficult these past few weeks, with one thing hitting right after the other.

My partner and I made the difficult decision to divorce a few weeks ago. We are staying in our current apartment until the lease is up in December. I began immediately saving for moving costs but…

My car had other ideas.

My 2021 Nissan Kicks was in great condition, always taken care of (just had it serviced a month ago). The transmission, for some unknown reason, decided to fail on me in traffic. Thankfully, nobody was hurt!

Now I have to replace the transmission, and the initial estimate for the repair is $7k.

I still owe $10k on the loan, so trade-in was out of the question. I was able to get a personal loan for $8k to cover the cost and get repairs going immediately so I can commute to work.

This adds another $175 payment to my monthly costs.

Those of you who know me know I’ve had an especially difficult time the past few years. Major car accident (not at fault), multiple irreversible chronic illness diagnoses, and my ex found out he had cancer.

I’m disabled but I have a full-time job. I work hard and take a lot of pride in the independence I’ve managed to hold onto. If you know me, you know I don’t like asking for help. I always figure it out. But I’ve hit the point where I’m burned out and I just can’t keep fighting the universe on my own. The stress of everything is negatively impacting my (already not-great) health.
