Calvin James (Jim) Small
Donación protegida
On Easter Monday, 2023 at the end of a walk in Bowring Park, Jim showed signs of a stroke and was rushed to hospital. Soon after Jim's diagnosis came in and it was the worst. He had glioblastoma in the temporal lobe, an inoperable and incurable brain tumor.
Jim received in-home support during the first 13 months of his illness, and spent the last 3 months receiving comfort care in Chancellor Park, a private nursing home in St. John's.
We were lucky and extremely thankful that Chancellor Park had a room available where Jim could receive timely care from professionally trained caregivers.
The health care system recognized that Jim's cancer was a special circumstance and he could easily fall between the cracks in the system. The community care workers made unprecedented efforts to meet his needs and keep him in continuous care.
We had hoped for and were preparing for a reasonable quality of life for Jim for as long as possible. His cancer took its final toll on him on June 19th, 2024 and he passed peacefully away in the presence of his family and friends.
I thank you for helping keep the cost of care in perspective. Continuing donations will be used to support the delivery of the School Breakfast Program (Kid's Eat Smart ), and to honor Jim's memory through a scholarship or bursary in his name.
