Calvin and Hobbes and Tracy, Oh My!

Calvin the dog, his best friend Hobbes the cat, and their mom Tracy need your help!

On the evening of March 28, Calvin the dog was playing one last round of tug-of-war with his favorite human, Tracy, before it got dark. After being outside for less than a minute, unknown dogs surprised them as they rounded Tracy’s car parked in the driveway. Besides being surprised and confused about where they came from, Calvin and Tracy noticed these dogs were especially interested in Calvin, and not in a friendly way. The dogs encircled Calvin and Tracy and began jumping on Calvin and nipping at him, and he cowered. When he showed his fear, the dogs attacked Calvin. In an effort to protect Calvin, Tracy jumped on top of him, hugging him into her chest to protect him, swatting, at the attacking dogs and screaming for help. Fortunately, several neighbors came to their rescue and allowed for a gap in time where Tracy could pick up Calvin and run inside.

After a few hours with EMTs, animal control, and the sheriff’s deputies, Tracy took Calvin to the animal ER. He was treated for punctures on his ear and had his foreleg sutured, and a variety of other cuts and scratches were clipped and cleaned.

Tracy then went to the ER herself for her own injuries. She has several cuts and scratches, 2 lacerations, and 8 puncture wounds, 2 of which went through her left palm (she is left handed) and one of which went through her right thumb nail at the cuticle. Because the dogs were unknown by anyone who witnessed the incident, Tracy has also had to receive rabies vaccinations, which in her case involves 4 rounds of shots over 2 weeks, for a total of 7 injections.

A history of Calvin and Hobbes

When Calvin the dog and Hobbes the cat were found in an abandoned house in north Florida, they were sent to the local county animal shelter. The dynamic duo were in foster care for almost 6 months, with few people interested in adopting both. However, Tracy came along and fell in love with the pair.

She drove 3 hours north, and brought the boys came home in August 2018. They have been a fun addition to the household, and Calvin is her go-everywhere “velcro” buddy.

Two days before Thanksgiving 2018, Tracy discovered a small, profoundly infected wound on Hobbes’ back. At the veterinarian, he was found to have a huge abscess that had come from a cat bite, probably when he stumbled into another cat’s territory. The abscess required surgical intervention, and placement of 5 drains. He had a tough time recovering from the infection and went back to the vet a few times for additional wound cleaning treatments and different types of antibiotic medications until it was finally resolved.

In February 2019, Tracy noticed that Hobbes was behaving strangely. He was not his usual talkative self, was sleeping a lot, refusing food, and acting generally very uncomfortable. He spent lots of time in the litter box, and she noticed that his visits to the box were...unproductive. He quickly got worse, so she took him to the animal ER where he was diagnosed with a life-threatening urethral blockage. His kidneys were on the verge of failing, and his blood potassium levels were approaching toxic levels, which would have resulted in cardiac arrest. The emergency veterinarians cleared the blockage, catheterized him, and began treatment for a severe urinary tract infection and struvite crystal accumulations in his bladder. He was hospitalized for 4 nights, and sent home with several pain medications, antibiotics, and prescription food. He has returned to the veterinarian 3 more times, most recently just 2 days ago, as the underlying urinary tract infection (or Hobbes himself!) seems resistant to the standard antibiotic medications.

To date, Tracy has spent $6554.08 on her boys, Calvin and Hobbes. These unexpected expenses for the boys she loves have left her in need of financial assistance.

Tracy has not yet received a bill for her own hospital and doctor’s visits, and she still has 2 more rounds of rabies shots and a hand specialist consultation to go before the final amount is calculated.  She is unsure how much her insurance will cover, but any dollar amount is honestly unaffordable for her at this point. Any assistance you can provide would mean the world to Calvin, Hobbes and their loving mom Tracy
