It is with great sadness that at 2123 on the 05/09/2025 my nephew Calum Rickhuss passed away following a short undiagnosed illness.

Calum had been getting bruises coming up for no reason for a while so my sister took him to the doctors and for a long time they were telling her that it was in her head. She wasn’t having that and persevered and eventually he was referred to Birmingham Children’s Hospital where they ran some tests and they said that it was his liver. My sister was still not convinced it was his liver but she trusted them and they gave her some steroids and said he will need to take these but will live a healthy life and they then went home. Last Saturday night his eyesight kept going and Calum complained that he couldn’t see so she rushed him back up Leighton hospital and they said this is his brain and was then transferred to Alder Hey Children’s hospital in Liverpool where they managed to get him stable. My sister was told that he was making good progress and should be home for his birthday, but they were still unsure as to what was wrong with him. On Wednesday he was sat up and talking and they were told that he could be taken out of the ward for an hour on Thursday and he was looking forward to going to get a full English breakfast with his mom at the cafe part of the hospital. Unfortunately that never happened as he took a turn for the worse and had to be rushed in for emergency surgery as he had a bleed on the brain as he started having seizures. By this time Calum was now in a very serious critical condition. He was sedated and on a ventilator to help him breathe this was a terribly worrying time for everyone. Later on Thursday afternoon he took another turn for the worse and was taken back into surgery as his pupils were not reacting and uneven. That night we were told that there was only a 20% chance he would survive. Calum the fighter made it through the night and was stable but when the doctor conducted more examinations and tests it shows that his brain was shutting down and he was eventually brain dead and it was only the machine keeping him alive. His mom then had to make the decision to turn the machine off and she climbed on his bed and hugged him right to the very end as he slowly slipped away. This poor lad was only 13 years old his birthday was in 11 days and had his whole life ahead of him this is just so cruel as we still do not know what the course was or how this happened as apparently this was all in my sisters head.

I am setting up this go fund me page to help my sister towards funeral costs to give this precious little boy the best send off he can and also if enough raised to help her to fight the hospital as to find out exactly what was wrong with Calum and get the answers she needs.
