Callaway Lewis is the strongest, bravest, 8 year-old I know. She's never met a hill she won't run or a rock she won't try to climb. But today Callaway is facing a new challenge that will require every ounce of grace and courage she has.
Sunday, February 21st, she went for an evening bike ride and bouldering expedition with her dad and older brother to a location near their house that they've climbed many times. The boulder Callaway was climbing started to slide and crushed her against another boulder.
She is in pediatric ICU and has had multiple surgeries since Sunday evening. The specialists are trying their best to save her leg, but her tibia and foot were crushed. Her mother and dad are struggling to make the very difficult decisions about what will be best for Cali in the long term. The decision concerning the function of her leg may be the most difficult a parent could ever make.
Callaway's dad Anthony is a small business owner. He and Laura, Callaway's mom, have basic health insurance and are unable to work while they're at Callaway's bedside. In addition to the exhaustion from no sleep, the decision that is looming regarding Callaway's leg, and heartache over seeing their child in such pain, there is the worry about what the multiple surgeries, days and possibly weeks in ICU, and weeks ahead in the hospital are going to do to the family's finances.
Even after going home, the cost of renovating the house to accommodate mobility challenges, and likely months or years of rehabilitation will continue to be a barrier to Callaway's return to her strongest, most active self.
We know Callaway will have the courage to face the pain and the hard work of rehabilitation, and will have the grace needed to face the difficult days. But her courage can't touch the gap with the health care costs. That's something beyond the reach of a little girl.
