On August 6th, 2020 I received a phone call that my mom was being rushed to the ER after taking a fall at work. At the time, she was responsive and complained of back pain. Upon arriving to the hospital, my mother was taken upstairs to a CAT scan only to code minutes later. A blood vessel had swelled and burst, causing bleeding between her skull and brain. She was diagnosed with a ruptured aneurysm. 24 hours later, she was prepped for a 5-hour brain surgery to repair the rupture. It was successful.
My mother spent the next 30 days on a ventilator alone in a hospital, unable to have visitors due to the current Covid-19 pandemic. In spite of the circumstances, she pushed through to make it out of the neuro-ICU, a brief stay in restorative care, and is now waiting to go home to finish recovering.
Anyone who has a family member that has suffered a stroke or any type of brain injury, knows the recovery is long and tedious. Before her aneurysm, my mother was physically active and living independently. She was known for going on mile-long walks with family and friends and frequently helped with the care of her nieces and nephews. In her current state, she is no longer able to live on her own or get around without full-time care. There is also the issue of my mother no longer having access to her 2nd floor apartment.
My sister and I currently live in Rutherford County, TN and have come to the conclusion that moving back to Memphis to care for her full-time is next step in her recovery. This is a huge ask and requires financial resources we don't currently have due to the pandemic.
Between my mother, sister, and myself, we have 3 leases that need to be broken and a deposit put on a house that is spacious enough for all 3 households to move into within the next 30 days. There are also the moving expenses that come with transporting 2 households 230 miles away.
This is where community comes in.
A dear friend of mine has generously offered the services of her moving company to move all 3 households for a total of $1200.
The total for breaking all 3 leases without a proper 60-day notice comes to a grand total of $5800.
We are setting a fundraising goal of $10k to help cover the lease termination fees, remaining moving expenses, and the first month's rent.
This has arguably been the most difficult task we have ever faced but the support and love my family has been shown makes it all not so unbearable.
Please help us reach our goal so we can give our mom the care and quality of life she deserves.
