California State Prison Book Clubs
We are a team of a Professor (Nicky Fox) and a Prison Librarian (Ms. Turner) with a group of dedicated Sac State interns trying to raise some fund for books!
Six years ago Dr. Fox and Ms. Turner met and decided to start a wild idea together- an academic book club in a Northern California prison. Since then, with the support of others, and hours of volunteering, and a newly implements Sacramento State internship program, the original book club expanded to several across three sites over the six years, including a writing program, masculinity program, and active book club participation.
Books clubs are important to prisons as they not only teach valuable skills (reading, writing, oral communication), and raise individual confidence, but they also create social bonds, lowering instances of violence within the prison by creating inclusive supportive environments that transfer outside bookclub spaces.
However, funds have run dry, and we are in desperate need of support to purchase books for our clubs. 100% of the money donated to this gofundme will go directly to books and allow us to continue this incredible space.
Please consider donating as no amount is too small. One book can change a life.
