California Roll, a dystopian short film written by Berzan Ekame and Sang Hun Kim. Directed by Sarah Kinsman Chute, and produced by Leilah El-Azizi.
California Roll is a not so distant fiction about three immigrants chasing a chance of safety and belonging in a country where any time they step outside may be their last. When one of them goes missing, the others must choose to risk everything to find him, or sacrifice their brotherhood for a change to belong.
It's a story about loyalty, and a land that makes promises it cannot uphold.
In an era of rising nationalism, California Roll asks urgent questions about identity, survival, and belonging. Told through the eyes of young immigrants, it captures a generation’s resilience in this age old fight for survival.
The film is a passion project made entirely by independent artists and filmmakers in NYC. That is why we need your help to bring this vision to life. Every dollar counts!
