Three months ago, Jimmy began to develop knots on his legs. Initially, the doctors said that it was fatty tumors, but then these areas began to turn into mysterious burn-like wounds that were very painful. Eventually, it was determined that it is a condition called calciphylaxis. This disease causes the veins to crystalize, stopping the blood flow into the muscle tissues. The flesh simply begins to die. It is a rare and highly painful condition, however, the doctors we have dealt with have indicated that they have noticed more cases lately. Treatment is "experimental" and very long-term depending on its severity.
Jimmy was receiving treatment in Lubbock, TX where he had two of his toes amputated because of this horrible disease, but had to be transferred to the Dallas area for additional specialized treatments. He has been moved to 5 different hospitals over the last two months and is showing some promise. Currently he is unable to walk and even sitting is extremely painful.
Due to the length of this process, my daughter delayed her July wedding waiting for her dad to improve enough to give her away. However, current diagnosis revealed that it might be months or longer before he will be able to have a normal life. Knowing this, she decided to "re-do" her wedding plans. On June 13th, she was married in her dad's hospital room!
As for our son and myself, we are having to relocate to the Dallas area and I have had to give up my job at an elementary school which I've had for 11 years. Not only have we left our friends back home, but we have lost a much-needed source of income. We are staying with my sister who lives in the area currently. By the way, Jimmy's dad passed away at the end of May while he was in the hospital. He could not even attend his father's funeral.
It's been tough and we sometimes feel like we are living the life of Job in the Bible, but we remain hopeful. Despite those who told us his chance of survival was bleak, he is still alive, he still has his legs and he will beat this thing. Our prayer is that as he recovers, the doctors will learn better techniques and treatments which might help another who may be suffering from calciphylaxis.
Your help and/or prayers will be greatly appreciated.
