Calamity's Calamitous Rehabilitation Fund

Earlier this week, my beloved rascal of a cat took a dive off of the balcony on her way to high adventure. That's her on the right, and as you can see, she's an important part of the family.

After intense searching in the middle of the night, I managed to find her, but in her distress, she ran deeper into the gator-infested mangroves. She got caught up in the tangled mangrove branches and almost drowned, which ironically was the only opportunity I had to actually get a hold of her.

She seemed wet and of a melancholic disposition, but otherwise unscathed.

When morning came, I noticed she was having issues with her back legs, and she hadn't touched water, food, or the litter box. As it's Sunday and clinics weren't open, I had to take her to an Animal Hospital. It turns out she had fractured her pelvis. They recommended surgery. My heart sank as I knew that was financially impossible.

We asked around for other options, and thankfully my partner's sister works at an ER Vet, and the surgeon there was gracious enough to look at the charts from the hospital. Their opinion was that the surgery wasn't absolutely necessary, but it would be a long road to recovery. At least three or four months of restricted movement. For a cat. Hmm.

So, here we are. They had to run a whole bunch of tests and x-rays, and Calamity has several medications that she's going to need to be taking for the coming months. I had to get her a kennel, her very own private apartment that has to be her home probably until at least the end of the year. We still don't know for certain if it will be enough as there could be further complications with her pelvis and hip (particularly around the Poops Department), so it's still going to be a lot of wait and see, but it seems the best option at the moment.

I'll admit it took a little convincing to put this up. Times have been really hard for everyone, and covid hasn't exactly made finances any better. Several amazing humans reached out and said they wanted to support, so I've put this together. There's no way I could afford the surgery, but at least this route, I could put down the funds to make sure she stays among us.

I've kept my estimate conservative and under the assumption that we won't be returning to the vet or an ER any time soon. It's basically an amount that covers the hospital bills, the kennel, and the medications. I should also point out that it's basically her birthday - she came stumbling out of the woods just after Hurricane Irma three years ago this month.

Took her in and she's been a little stinker ever since. Though I didn't realize she'd be so keen to live up to her name. I mean, does this cat scream "Diving Off a Balcony and Into Gator-Infested Mangroves"? Hmm. Maybe a little...
