Help My Cajun Classrooms!

Donation protected
Greetings from the Cajun Crossroads of Avoyelles Parish! My name is Kelsey McPherson and I'm a first year teacher on a mission to promote foreign language and literacy out in the rural expanse of South Louisiana. For the next year I will be teaching at Avoyelles High School in the village of Moreauville and need your help to create a dynamic classroom experience for my students.

My school is a cultural melting pot that caters to a diverse mix of students: Cajun, Creole, and even Native-American. Unfortunately, the one commonality between all of them is that they are in desperate need of resources. These are the classes that I'm teaching and what I need to provide for them:

1) My 8th grade ELA students need independent reading books. Most of them are coming into my class at a 5th grade reading level or lower, so it's vital that they have access to reading materials to help improve their literacy skills. Unfortunately, there's no school library for them to use and the local library is very small and only open several hours a week. My goal is to create an in-class library of YA and classic novels that will spark a love for reading in all of my students.

2) For the past several years, Avoyelles High School's students have gone without a Spanish teacher and it's now up to me to revamp the department (which consists of me) and make sure that my students are receiving the best foreign language education possible. In order to make that happen, I need to buy textbooks (either Cuentame Más or Español Santillana, depending on how much money I can raise) and other supplies for my class. Ideally, I'd like to create a library of Spanish language books and movies for my students to enjoy both inside and outside of the classroom.

Living in a poor, rural community shouldn't prevent my students from receiving an excellent education. Bringing books to my students is the first step in providing them with the tools they need to be successful. Please help me in my goal of educating and empowering my kids!

As the majority of my students come from economically disenfranchised households, any leftover funds will go towards providing them with classroom supplies. Thank you for your help!
