Caitlin took a tumble. That’s even what they wrote on the incident report in the first aid cabin. "Caitlin took a tumble on her skis. Left binding failed to release." A binding is a marvel of the 21st century, it releases the boot from the ski and therefore prevents leg injury when you inevitably fall and roll down the mountain.
Caitlin's left binding didn’t release. She could feel the ski twisting her leg into an impossible position. No gnarly details, but the bruising on her bones indicate that her foot might have actually turned backwards.
She now has to have surgery to replace the ACL and repair the meniscus.
These are the facts:
-Caitlin is in Jackson Wyoming serving as an AmeriCorps intern at Teton Literacy Center, an amazing non-profit that provides free and fun out-of-school education for underserved youth. She is developing engaging and educational curriculum for primarily Latino students at the pre-kindergarten to third grade level.
-This position is unpaid.
-Insurance will kick in at $2,750. That is a lot out of pocket, but covers a huge portion of the cost of the surgery. (Thanks Obama!)
-What insurance won't cover is Caitlin's Game Ready. It is a fantastic device, used often on racehorses (What up, KY?!) It applies compression and ice cold water to the affected area in specific timed intervals. Even running on a timer throughout the night. This machine is said to cut the recovery time from knee injuries in HALF. For two weeks rental it is $300
-Caitlin had to take an ambulance to the ER and received emergency care at the ski resort. A guesstimate of those costs is $500 conservatively.
-Plus any unforeseen expenses; like when there is a co-pay at the PT office, or when insurance will only cover part of something.
-This totals out to around $4000
-The first $300 is for the Game Ready. Surgery is next Tuesday at 12 MST and the machine has to be ready to go before then. She cannot have a succesful recovery without it.
ANY AMOUNT IS MORE THAN ENOUGH.
