Cage Free Animal Rescue and Sanctuary
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Julie Prem. My partner Charles (Pete) Schaubhut, DVM and I turned our living space into a cage free animal rescue 18 years ago. For the first 6 years we lived in the basement of the East Village Veterinarian, his practice on Eldridge Street between Houston and Stanton in NYC. When the rent was set to double in 2012 we moved to a house in Hudson, NY. I didn't anticipate needing to ask for financial help.
To date we have taken in approximately 600 felines and 200 dogs. As each one arrives I tell them they are safe, home and loved. That they will never leave unless I am able to find them an equally splendid home. I've curtailed intake as the numbers of creatures that were meant to live out their days here has grown. Loving and caring for these animals has been my full time job since our rescue began.
We currently share our home with 48 felines, two 200 pound potbelly pigs, 7 guinea pigs and 8 dogs. Five new cats are arriving within the next few weeks.

Pete is 82 and continues to practice.. He works two days a week in Manhattan and five half days at a cat rescue in Hudson where he cares for the in-house population and for the cats and dogs of people who can’t afford a local vet.
Please help us care for these animals and the ones that continue to come. (I have a life insurance policy and a dear young friend (thank you Geneva!) who will move her family into our house and care for the animals I predecease). If there are any people in your lives that might appreciate you sharing this (and I hope there are) please add a personal note before forwarding.
I promise not to divulge the names or contact information of anyone who helps us. I am happy to hear from people with questions or concerns!
I appreciate you reading this far. I wish you daily moments of joy and wonder and the ability to give and receive acts of kindness!
