In an instant, everything changed! It all started with a routine doctor’s visit. By the end of that week, Caela would be diagnosed with rare pediatric cancer. Further testing would show the cancer had spread throughout her body, including her bone marrow, and she was placed at stage 4.
That was 2 years ago, and Caela amazes us every day with her strength and determination. After a year-long battle with weekly chemo treatments, many hospitalizations and 3 months of intensive radiation therapy, Caela was declared cancer free. We knew the chance of relapse was high, but were hopeful Caela would have at least a little while to live her life.
However, cancer had a different plan and within a year, it had returned with new growths throughout her body. The news was devastating. As Caela started to prepare herself once again for treatment, we looked into different options and came across a promising clinical trial. It had shown results in even late stage cancer patients, particularly in those with Rhabdomyosarcoma, Caela's diagnosis. After a few months in the trial, her scans showed her tumors shrinking. However, there were also new growths in other areas of her body. It was determined Caela would need to resume chemo treatments. The worst news came when she was informed she would no longer qualify for the clinical trial. She could remain on the medication and receive chemo, but since she was no longer in the study, she would have to pay out of pocket for the medication.
We are fundraising to help keep Caela on the medication that has shown some promise. We want to help with that cost, as well as all the accumulating expenses that even decent medical insurance won't cover.
