Cadence's Fight Against Cancer

Spende geschützt
Funding from this page will be used for expenses incurred during treatment for Cadence, recently diagnosed with stage 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Cadence will be 16 in a few months and, until recently, was dealing with normal teen-age things like homework and starting driver’s education. Everything changed in early October when she started running a low-grade fever. A COVID-19 test came back negative so with that good news Cadence and her family waited, assuming it was a different, minor virus that would run its course. With no other real symptoms and her fever still very low they were not overly concerned.

As time passed without improvement, along with the development of a small lump in one of her shoulder lymph nodes, Cadence returned to the Doctor and tests done for Mono and Strep returned negative. Blood work and a CT scan were ordered. The CT scan showed a mass in her chest and she was immediately sent to Akron Children’s Hospital. Many tests followed along with a biopsy of the swollen lymph node and then the long waiting process began.

The diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma finally gave Cadence and her family some answers. Since then she has had a PET scan and, with her medical team, a treatment plan was developed, a port was placed for her medications, and a bone marrow biopsy was done. Cadence is facing an intense 5-round chemotherapy course. Each round runs 21 days with 3 days in hospital for IV chemo followed by an outpatient treatment on day 8. Day 9 begins daily injections at home. She will be taking oral chemotherapy throughout as well. After completing the first course she will be admitted for more tests to determine whether or not she is able to physically tolerate the next round. After all 5 rounds are completed a decision will be made regarding the need for radiation, targeting the tumor in her chest directly.

With her first treatment behind her Cadence’s determination remains strong even though the reality of a greatly altered holiday season will be challenging for her and her family. While we cannot prevent the pain of the journey they are facing we can help to ease the financial hurdles that inevitably follow such a diagnosis. Families that are in a fight for the life of their child need a hand with the many expenses not covered by insurance. Funds to help with loss of income, fuel for the many trips back and forth, and food during the long hours spent in waiting rooms are just a few of the many ways we can help. And Christmas is just around the corner! If anyone needs some holiday cheer, it’s those we care about who are facing mountains they’ve never faced before. Please pray for strength, peace, and healing for this family. And thank-you for remembering Cadence and her parents, Adam and Shelly Chrapowicki, this year!
