Sometime last year Caden came to me asking to go on a mission trip to Mexico City…I turned him down. I was nervous honestly. To take my 10 year old son into a country that the US was not as friendly with as in the past and then to work in the city as an American, scared me. I wasn’t sure. I was honestly hoping that he would just forget about it. Well the next year, he didn’t. He saw the opportunity appear in the church bulletin once again this year. He started again…this time I gave him the opportunity to show me he REALLY wanted to go. He attended the meetings, talked with another kiddo a bit older than him about his experience, and voiced to me the reason his heart felt the need to go – his need to want to help others like Brill (a child we sponsor in India). He’s always been older than his age, stronger than he thinks, and has a heart the size of the moon – so this time…I said “yes”.
That’s how we got here…but honestly doing a mission trip has been something I’ve thought about since I was young, then again in college, and yet again as an adult. I’ve sponsored children in other countries, for years, but it just never seemed “enough”. Brooks and I always wanted to do more, but weren’t sure what move to make. It’s always been in the back of my mind but I never acted on it. Honestly, life “got in the way”. When Caden started asking I finally realized that God was working through my own kid to get my butt moving!
"Why Mexico? Why not here? There are people who need help here as well"... you might be asking these questions. We totally understand! I wonder "why Mexico" too, but I've come to realize that it's God's will at work and not mine. There is a reason my son was so bent on Mexico...I'm not sure what it is, but we're going to find out! God calls people all over the world - some to New York, some to California, some to Beaver, PA... it matters not so much WHERE you're called but THAT you're called. Would I have loved to have been called to Hawaii, SURE! But that's not our place...right now ;)
Mexico City is a very poor city and the people there are in desperate need of physical and spiritual nourishment. We will be working with a team of people in the poor communities of the city, providing medical, dental (which if you know me I WON'T be thrilled with!), optical, and hygiene care to the people there. We will also have the opportunity to share God’s word daily through the kid’s programs that Caden will be helping with and through acts of service, personal contact with the Mexican people, and our support of the churches there! We are praying for open hearts and ears for the Mexican people, and for spiritual growth for Caden and I and the other team members. The others going from our church have been on a mission trip before…Caden and I are the “newbies”! We know this will be a journey that we won’t soon forgetten and we hope one that we continue with Brooks, Cruz, and Lyla in future years! They are already BEGGING to go! But as many of you know, “I’m mean”…so they have to wait until they are 10/11. ;)
And here’s where we need help…the part you’ve been waiting for probably. Our church, Four Mile Church, is providing some of the funds necessary for us to attend this mission, but we are responsible for finding financial sponsors and a team of people to pray for our trip! Our trip will cost nearly $2,700.00 – that’s combine, Caden and I. Caden has created ways to earn some of this (as was the deal to proving he’s dedicated) and we will work together with the church to fundraise as well. This is where we need YOU! If you’d like to pray for our trip, help provide supplies to take to the Mexican people, or provide monetarily we’d be forever grateful!
We will be adding photos and possibly video so you can see where your donations went and how much you've made an impact! We are so truly grateful for the opportunity and pray that God will work through us to make a difference in the lives of those in need and just as importantly, make a big impact in our own hearts as well – bringing my soon to be teenage son and I closer together and closer to God at the same time!
Before I close I wanted to give Caden the opportunity to say why this service spoke to his heart in his own words… Caden…
“Hi my name is Caden Canavesi and the reason that I think God called me to do this is because the people at Mexico City are sad, miserable, and mistreated, unlike us because we have all we need and more. We will be so grateful if you will help us help the people in Mexico, and I’m sure the people in Mexico City will be too.”
He's a man of little words...not like his mother! LOL!
Thank you so much for any kindness you can give! We'll keep you updated for sure and those who can donate through prayer...WE'LL NEED IT so "thank you" from the bottom of our hearts!
