My name is Alexis Calvin Epps and I am currently a third year graduate student at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. I will be graduating in June 2016 with a masters in architecture. I am the only Black Architecture Student in the graduate program and one of two Black students in the entire program. This can be very discouraging at time and for that reason I am starting a scholarship fund that promotes black youth's pursuit of careers in creative professions such as Architecture. We should be involved in shaping the enviroments that we function in everyday. The basic purpose of the scholarship is written below. This is a start up effort. I hope to have the first scholarhip available for the 2017-2018 school year along with a non profit that promotes community support with in the Black Architecture Community.
Scholarships Purpose
The architectural profession is full of opportunity, but the expense of attending and being successful once a student decides this is what they want to do is too often an added stress to the work load. Being an alumni of an architecture program, I also found it hard to find support relating to Black social issues and how they coincided with architecture. This scholarship is not only a way to provide financial support to Black Students interested in pursuing a career in architecture, but also provide a community of Aspiring Black Architects on the West Coast. This scholarship is meant to encourage more Black Students to follow their creative talents and become apart of the community that designs the rest of the world.
The scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis to a high school senior getting ready to attend a NAAB accredited program and a college senior or graduate student entering their final year in their first professional degree. Each student will recieve $1,000 each. The remaining money will go to the advertising, website development and non-profit development in order to create a legit educational based organization built to empowering Black youth and their creative abilities.
I thank you for your support and consideration and if you have any information that would help me and obtaining funds or advise on creating a non-profit organization in order to support this cause please feel free to let me know. Again thank you for your support.
