Supporting the Vargas Mora Family After the Loss of Samantha

Our hearts are broken as we come together to support the Vargas Mora family after the tragic loss of Samantha Vargas Mora, 17, of Columbus.

Samantha passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2026, in Omaha after a long and incredibly courageous battle. What began as the flu in December turned into devastating medical complications. She was hospitalized at Children’s Hospital in Omaha from early January, where she spent three months in intensive care, including five weeks in a coma. Through it all, Samantha fought with remarkable strength and resilience. Her family never left her side for a single moment.

Samantha was a junior at Lakeview High School and a bright light in the lives of so many. She loved her family deeply and was a role model to her cousins, nieces, and nephews. At school, she was known for her spirit and loyalty. Samantha loved her Lakeview Vikings and rarely missed an activity—always cheering, always encouraging, always showing up. She wasn’t just a fan—she was part of what made the Lakeview community so special.

This loss is not only emotionally devastating, but it also brings an unexpected financial burden. After months of intensive medical care and now funeral expenses, the family is facing overwhelming costs during an already unimaginable time of grief.

We are asking our community, friends, Viking Nation, and all who were touched by Samantha’s life to come together and support the Vargas Mora family. Any contribution—no matter the size—will help ease the financial strain and allow the family to focus on what matters most: honoring Samantha’s life and supporting one another.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church on April 10th.

Samantha’s strength, love, and spirit will never be forgotten. Now it is our turn to show that same love to her family.
