Dear reader,
My name is Mayra Alejandra Morfin and I am first generation Mexican-American. Like most of you, I come from an immigrant family that came to the United States for a better opportunity. My family unit is made up of four people; those being: My father (Salvador), mother (Martha), brother (Richard), and then there’s me (Mayra). My parents came to California from Guadalajara Mexico, in 1984. They wanted that “American Dream” that most people saw on television or read in articles. My parents quickly adapted to their new environment. Once they were independent and settled in, they decided to raise a family (that’s where my annoying brother & I come in). We grew up in a household where both parents worked in order to provide for us. We learned values and morals that our parents instilled in us and thus making us decent human beings.
We have never asked people to help us financially, we always figured out a way to make ends meet. However, there are certain circumstances that leave you no option. Over the summer, my father was in a HORRENDOUS motor vehicle accident. My dad was transported to the hospital, where he needed immediate attention. He lost so much blood, that he almost did not make it. My dad suffered from both blunt force and penetrating trauma. His nose, ribs, legs and spinal cord were broken. My dad also had lungs and other organs trauma. In fact, my father had more doctor’s than my fingers could count. In addition, my dad also had multiple blood transfusions and a ton of other procedures that I can’t even list. After having multiple surgeries, my father was in critical but stable condition.
Moreover, due to the impact of the accident, my father also lost majority of his teeth. Although, teeth for some may be a cosmetic issue… for my father the ability to be able to smile, properly eat and chew is important. Currently, my dad is still in an acute ICU because he is still recuperating. However, my dad has a long road to recovery. Due to his spinal cord injury, my dad must learn how to move again. He will be having extensive physical therapy. The odds of my father ever walking again are stacked up against us… BUT we are a family of faith, and we will do everything we can in order to help my dad be that independent person he once was.
In the same token, there are certain modifications that my parent’s home needs in order to make it wheelchair accessible. So, this is the reason why I am choosing to ask for financial help. Everything donated will go for hospital, rehab and other expenses that my dad will have. Thank you for taking the time reading, donating and sharing my story.
Most appreciative,
Mayra A. Morfin
