The Heart of a Community Needs our Help
Donation protected
Sometimes the person holding up the whole community needs someone to hold her up, too.
I met Mistina, the owner of Hurricane Coffee Company, through a mutual acquaintance last year. A homeless Army veteran had been hit by a car and was recovering from broken bones. Mistina, without hesitation, took him into her own home. When I arrived with coworkers to help him get to the VA and our shelter, I realized this was no ordinary woman. As we were leaving, my coworker noticed an injured squirrel in her window—Mistina was nursing it back to health.
That was my first glimpse of her heart, and I’ve been inspired by her ever since.
Hurricane Coffee is More Than Coffee
Hurricane Coffee Company is a refuge. A place where:
• If you’re hungry, you’re fed.
• If you’re in need, you can grab clothes from the community closet.
• If you’re without a home, you can wash your clothes in the free washer/dryer.
• If you’re battling addiction, there’s Narcan available and NA meetings held weekly.
• If you’re in danger, like facing abuse or trafficking, signal her staff with a wink when ordering and they will discreetly contact the authorities.
• If you’re struggling, there’s always a warm smile, a listening ear, and a path forward.
She runs this all on donations and Mistina doesn’t take a salary. Everything goes back into the shop and into serving others.
Why We’re Asking for Help
Mistina would never ask for help herself—but those of us who know her are asking now.
Running a place like this is beautiful but heavy. It comes with costs—financial, emotional, and physical. And as much as she’s given to the community, it’s time we give something back.
We’re raising funds to:
• Help cover operating costs for the shop (utilities, supplies, food)
• Restock the pantry, closet, and hygiene station
• Provide Mistina with a small financial cushion to breathe, rest, and regroup
• Keep free services available to anyone who walks through her doors in need
No donation is too small. Every share helps. Every act of kindness comes back around—and Mistina has more than earned this support.
Let’s Show Her She’s Not Alone
If you’ve ever wished you could do something truly meaningful… this is your chance. Mistina carries so many—let’s carry her for a little while.
Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.
