Hello,
I'm Phil Campbell. I'm a singer, songwriter and musician and have been all my life. I make a full time living as a self-employed person, using my skills in the commercial music industry as a recording artist and touring musician. I'm mostly known as the lead singer in a band called The Temperance Movement.
In addition to this, a substantial amount of my earnings comes from hospitality, singing in piano bars and for corporate functions. The wedding industry also provides much work year round where I sing at ceremonies and drinks receptions.
In short, I literally sing for my supper. I'm a piano player and guitarist but my main instrument is my voice.
Over the past year, I have been experiencing some difficulties with my voice, requiring the use of steroids to enable me to perform. A recent endoscopy revealed I have a small cyst on my right vocal cord which accounts for much hoarseness and difficulty controlling notes when singing.
The doctor advised I have it removed surgically as soon as possible to return my voice to normal function but also to rule out any risk of cancer. I am scheduled to have my operation on the 7th of January which is where I require help through this GofundMe.
The combined impact of paying for the operation and not being able to work during my recovery is where I’m facing a challenge.
NHS waiting times for the operation are up to a year. This means I would risk further damaging my voice whilst waiting for the operation, and also means I would have to cancel my work over the next year, including summer festivals I have booked with The Temperance Movement
I humbly ask for any financial support towards the cost of the operation and subsequent recovery time. Doctor assures me that although the operation is debilitating immediately with a slow recovery, if all goes well, my voice should return to normal ability by March/April which allows me time to get back into work, ready for summer festivals in June and beyond.
Thank you for your time in reading this. If you've got this link then you're on a mailing list of people who are fans of my music and who have supported me in the past. I am very grateful to be in a position to ask where others have no such lifeline.
Phil x
