This is Christian. He is a five year old little boy from Middletown, NY. Just as everyone has a story, Christian has one as well...we just wanted to share his with you, bring awareness to a syndrome that is so rare and to help raise funds to offset costs of medical expenses and travel for him and his family as he is facing a major surgery come December and two more surgeries come 2016.
One thing we can bet when you meet him, you will never forget him, with his warm personality, beautiful smile, strong will, courage and strength.
Christian Smith, born with a rare syndrome called Apert Syndrome which causes premature fusing of the bones in his head, face, fingers and toes. In December Christian will face yet another highly invasive cranial surgery to help alleviate elevated intracranial pressure, slowly building in his skull. Surgery to be performed by a highly skilled surgeon and his craniofacial team who specializes in his syndrome in Dallas, Texas, who with this surgery will alleviate pressure and make room for his brain to grow. This will be his third surgery he will face on his skull. To date Christian has had four highly invasive surgeries. Two to carefully create 10 fingers
and 10 toes and two on his head to expand his skull with many more to go as he grows.
Surgeries in 2016 are planned in Boston, MA with a specialized hand surgeon to help reconstruct his fingers to help give him as much independence and function as possible.
Unfortunately, after his skull surgery he will most likely face another corrective surgery to tighten loosened eye muscles, as a side effect from head surgery causes straying of the eyes.
Christian is loved by so many. Including the City of Middletown's Fire Dept. Christian is Middletown Fire Departments Honorary member of Excelsior Hook & Ladder Company, No.1.
