On Sunday Aug 27, Adam (12) and Dakota(8) were in the back yard looking for frogs. Adam flipped a piece of wood and a cottonmouth snake came out from under it. The snake was headed towards Dakota and Adam tried to swat it away to prevent her from being bit. In the process the snake turned and bit Adam in the right hand.
EMS was immediately called and Adam was taken to WK South in Shreveport. Once in the ER he was given meds for pain as well as 6 vials of antivenom. He was admitted to the PICU where he was given 9 more vials of antivenom.
Through the first night his hand continued to swell more than it should have.
Monday morning the pediatric intensivist came to check him and immediately called in a hand surgeon. Adam had developed compartment syndrome and the pressures in his hand were so high that it was cutting off circulation to his fingers. Through the day on Monday his arm was placed in an upright position to try to relieve the pressure but by Tuesday morning it was no better and he was transferred to WK Bossier where he received surgery to open his hand and allow the fluid to drain.
The procedure went well and he was transferred back to WK South PICU for continued monitoring where he received two more vials of antivenom because his body continued to react.
Late on Wednesday he was able to be removed from the morphine pump and begin taking oral pain medication.
Thursday afternoon he was discharged because no more can be done for him aside from pain management.

He continues to have severe pain, as well as numbness and little control of his right hand. He will see the surgeon for a follow up on Tuesday.

He still shows very little signs of capillary refill, feeling or temperature in his right hand index finger but it will be another week or so of viewing the change of his finger before we know if amputation is necessary.

During this week Chase (Adams father) missed work without pay so he could be between the hospital and home with Dakota and Sylas.

We're hoping to raise money for the family to offset the cost of his missed time at work this week, as well as missed time in the future for appointments or should more surgery be needed for Adam.
The family also isn't sure how much their insurance will cover, and have been told that one vial of CroFab Antivenom is about $13k, and Adam received Seventeen Vials.

If you're unable to donate, Prayers and love Well wishes are very appreciated while they go through this.

If you'd like to send Adam a card or gift you can DM his mom on Facebook for address and his Amazon wishlist.

All help is so appreciated and the family is beyond thankful for the outpouring of support and love for Adam. He's definitely our little hero in saving his sister.
