The backstory….
Back in April, Jackson had an appointment with a sports orthopedic for leg pain he had been having that just wasn't getting any better. In two short but very long days Jackson was meeting with an orthopedic oncologist discussing a tumor they found on his femur. Over the following week Jackson underwent tests and had multiple appointments at Golisano Children's Hospital. The diagnosis came back, Jackson has osteosarcoma periosteal subtype (a type of bone cancer).
Jackson then had more appointments and some scans done. The results were good, showing that the cancer had not spread anywhere else. However, Jackson needed surgery right away to remove the tumor.
After careful consideration, it was agreed that Jackson would travel to Sloan Kettering (NYC) for the surgery. The doctors there have more experience with this type of cancer and could offer options that would give Jackson the best long term outcomes.
Jackson underwent this surgery on May 15th, where they removed 18cm of his femur. The process of re-growing Jackson's bone is extensive. They are using a technique called Distraction Osteogenesis which will lengthen and reshape his own bone. Jackson will need two more surgeries to complete this process. He did outstanding throughout the surgery and was back home the following week.
He. Is. Amazing.
Jackson returned to SK on May 30th for his follow up. His leg is healing and the bone regrowth process is looking really good. However, the tumor that was removed was biopsied and it was determined to contain high-grade cancer cells. Jackson will now be undergoing chemo treatments for about the next 7 months. Although he continues to remain positive, this wasn't the news they had hoped for.
Renee, Matt and the boys are so grateful for all the love and support they have gotten so far. Thank you for considering a Go Fund Me donation to help further support them throughout this journey.
