Monday, February 29th, was the worst day of my life: it was the day I found my son, Chris, comatose in his bed. He had been sick with the flu for a week, and I became concerned when he had stopped responding to texts. When I found him he'd likely been that way for hours. He was rushed to the hospital and, with difficulty, thankfully, stabilized. However, that's when we learned that early tests showed evidence of brain damage.
Chris has a kind, creative mind. Ever since he was little he'd move from craft to craft, learning knitting, origami, drawing, the guitar...the list goes on. His favorite avenue for this creativity was gift-giving; I remember when he showed me an origami swan made from 500 pieces of paper that he'd made for his girlfriend on her birthday. Whenever he visited us, his father, brother, two sisters, and I couldn't wait to see what wonderful project he'd brought.
Now, Chris is recovering from the damage he sustained when his brain was starved of oxygen. He's made steady progress thusfar, but he's still unresponsive. The hospital is preparing to discharge him to a rehabilitation center where we hope he can receive specialized care. However, his medical bills will be astronomical. His insurance won't allow him to stay there long before they demand that he be sent to successively cheaper and less-specialized facilities. With your help, we can ensure that Chris gets the best care and the best chance. I need my son.
