Brazen's Recovery Relief

Donation protected
This is our son Brazen.  He's eight years old and about the happiest kid you'd ever meet in 3rd grade.  He is already showing strong creative skills with a mind that wraps his head around the outside world.  Whether its a new masterpiece on violin in school orchestra or fantastic construct made from his LEGOs, this kid loves to create.  We want our son to have the opportunity he deserves to bring his creativity to the world, and that is why we are asking for your help.

We live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (in Baldwin to be more specific).  Along with his sister Iris, we love being a part of this town and raising our kids to be part of their community.  One of Brazen's favorite groups are the local chapter of the Cub Scouts.

On October 24th, 2015, Brazen went out with his Cub Scout Pack to an annual halloween event.  There was a haunted trail, pumpkin patch, and a hay ride for all the kids to enjoy (Brazen was really excited about the pumpkin patch!).  After the hay ride, he went to take a closer look at the creek.  Then the unthinkable happened...

A ten-foot long, six-inch wide branch broke off a tree and fell approximately 50 feet and struck our little boy in the head.  The branch knocked him unconscious for about five minutes.  The pack leader saw the events unfold, and the on-site paramedics arrived quickly to help our little boy.  They saw how serious his injuries were and rushed him to The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

He was taken to the trauma room for initial diagnosis.  He had a knot about the size of a softball on his head.  His had lost mobility in his right hand, and began to vomit uncontrollably.  To see the extent of the injury, they sent Brazen for a CT scan.  Results showed he had a depressed skull fracture and bleeding in his brain.  This meant Brazen needed an emergency craniotomy.  The depressed portion of his skull needed to be reset, and a plasma plate was put in to regain structural integrity to his head.

The surgery was a success.  Now it was a waiting game to see whether the mobility would return in his hand as the swelling in his head subsided.  Unfortunately, it did not.  That meant Brazen would have to endure the process of occupational therapy.  It will be a long road to recovery.

We were very grateful for the medical staff at Children's Hospital saving our son's life.  Now we have to pay them for it.  Right now, we have bills for the ambulance ride, his hospital stay, Brazen's occupational therapy, and doctors' fees totalling $80,000.  This does not include the emergency surgery, the anesthesiologists, and other hospital fees.  At a minimum, we are expecting a total of $200,000 to $250,000.

Things have just begun to settle down after the surgery.  We put the Christmas tree up in the house, Brazen has been able to return to school, and 2015 is quickly coming to a close.  We are doing the best we can with the bills we are facing, but we could use some help.   100% of all funds donated to us will be put towards Brazen's medical bills.  Every single donation, regardless of size, is helping us get a little bit closer to our goal.  Our goal will not eliminate all our bills, but it will change our lives and outlook for our financial future.

Thank you for taking the time to listen to our story.  We hope you are able to enjoy the holidays with your loved ones.  This Christmas is different for us.  It makes us appreciate the time we spend together as a family even more.
