她們守在歷史的谷底,日復一日地追索與傾聽,力圖把尚未被說出的故事帶回公共視野;
她們站在法的門前,反覆理解灰色地帶何以誕生,以及我們與他們的距離;
也許你讀過在場的作品,參加過活動與工作坊,或者只是偶爾打開電子報;

The Stories We Can't Leave Behind
On the Sixth Season ofThe Frontline Fellowship for Chinese Creative Nonfiction, and the First-Ever Frontline Fellowship Supporters Award
Over the past five years, The Frontline Fellowship for Chinese Creative Nonfiction has received more than 1,500 writing proposals.
Every year, after the selection is over, we are left with a few stories we can't let go of.
The judges deliberate at length, cast their votes, and finalize the list of fellows. However, there are always the ones who slip through.
"I hope she can find her way out of the mountains— I hope she gets to finish writing this."
"If only we had one more spot. He'd already gone there in person. It's such a shame."
This kind of regret has repeated itself, season after season for five years.
This year was no different.
The writers who move us most are always those who feel they have no choice but to write.
Those who try to understand a piece of history that changed the course of their life; those who search for a forgotten name buried at the edges of public memory, yet one that never stopped haunting her; those who bear witness to a disappearing voice before it is gone forever; those who consumed by a single urgent thought: If I don't write this now, no one ever will.
Over time, Frontline Fellowship has developed its own standard: Write because you must. Write because only you can tell the story.
What we look for has never been important topics alone — it is the people who have a real, lived relationship with those topics. We care about how a person's life collides with the world around them. And it is precisely at that point of collision that public questions come into the light.
In an age of endless information, when knowing more often makes it harder to care deeply, we believe that the most urgent issues, and even the most principled ideals, can only retain their force when they are reconnected with individual lives. It is real people who have the power to live in truth — and to make the world feel true again.
This year, the Sixth Season of the Frontline Fellowship Writing Award received more applications than ever before. And still — it is those people we cannot let go of.
Writers who stand vigil at the bottom of history, tracking and listening day after day, determined to bring stories not yet told back into public view. Writers who stand at the threshold of the law, working to understand how gray areas come to exist — and what separates us from those on the other side. Writers who cross barriers of language and geography, working from the front lines of conflict, insisting on placing the human being before the issue.
But the available places are always limited. These stories may never reach more eyes.
Over the years, the acceptance rate per season has been under 2%.Without greater support, these proposals may stay exactly where they are — as proposals. Never completed. Never written.
So this year, we want to try something new.
Beyond the original five recipients, we are adding 1–3 new spots: the Frontline Fellowship Supporter Prize — to give more exceptional proposals the full support they need to become completed works.
Over the past five years, Frontline Fellowship has been sustained primarily through the generosity of our judges, editors, and partners. And along the way, we have gained more and more supporters.
You — reading this now — are already part of what holds us together.
Perhaps you've read Frontline Fellowship's published works, attended an event or workshop, or simply opened our newsletter once in a while. Perhaps a single piece once made you remember an author's name. We may not know each other personally, and yet we keep finding each other through these stories.
And that's how we know: some stories are worth keeping.
This year, for the first time, we want to open this door. We invite you to join us — and to support the stories that Frontline Fellowship can't let go of.
▍The Frontline Fellowship Supporter Prize
This year, we hope to raise additional funds to add 1–3 new recipients beyond the original five. For every amount raised sufficient to support one author through a complete writing project, we will add one Supporter Prize recipient.
All funds raised will go entirely into the prize pool — none will be used for team operations, staffing, administration, design, or technical costs.
▍How much does it take to support one author?
Based on our experience and feedback from authors, the basic support needed to see one writing project through to completion includes:
- Writing fellowship stipend
- Full editorial support throughout
Total: approximately €2,300
Therefore:
- €2,300 = 1 additional Supporter Prize recipient
- €4,600 = 2 additional Supporter Prize recipients
- €6,900 = 3 additional Supporter Prize recipients
Any surplus funds will be carried over in full to the following season's Supporter Prize.
▍How will the Supporter Prize recipients be selected?
Supporter Prize recipients will be chosen from the outstanding proposals that have already advanced to this season's final selection round. The selection process remains the same as always, decided by our existing panel of judges — no separate jury will be organized.
This fundraising campaign will close on July 1.
Within two weeks of closing, we will announce the fundraising results and the Supporter Prize recipients on our website and social media platforms. We will also provide regular updates to all who participated, on how the funds are being used and how the projects are progressing.
▍How to donate
Open donation — contribute any amount you choose. Please note that due to platform settings, the minimum donation is €5.
A few things to be aware of:
- The "Suggested" donation amount displayed on the payment page is a platform default — it is not set by Frontline Fellowship.
- After you enter your donation amount, a "Tip GoFundMe services" slider will automatically appear with a suggested percentage. This is an optional platform gratuity and is not required. You are welcome to adjust the slider or set it to zero.
- ⚠️ The name you enter on the payment page will be publicly displayed on the fundraising page. Please enter the name or alias you are comfortable making public. ⚠️
▍About Frontline Fellowship
The Frontline Fellowship Writing Award was established in 2021. To date, we have received more than 1,200 proposals from Chinese-language writers across dozens of countries around the world. Over five years, we have supported 22 long-form nonfiction works, and referred or connected more than one hundred proposals to media outlets and publishing houses worldwide. More than 70 experienced judges and editors have participated in the Frontline Fellowship support network.
Over five years, we have grown ever more convinced: the most powerful public storytelling almost always comes from the most honest personal testimony. Every author uses their own life as a bridge. And every reader willing to cross it makes that testimony real.
If you're willing, we welcome you to join us — to turn regret into possibility. To support the stories that have not yet been written, and the people who have the power to make the world feel real again.
