On April 7, Doug Byrum was in a devastating motorcycle accident. He suffered major injuries, including a badly broken arm, shattered facial bones, and a traumatic brain injury. It was a miracle he survived, and it was a miracle that after a month, he came out of a coma. His family is in awe of the ways God moved to spare his life. However, his ongoing care needs are longterm and intense as he recovers.
As the sole provider for his wife Amy and their four young sons, Doug worked as a lawyer and carried the health insurance. He cannot work now, and possibilities for the future are uncertain.
The medical bills are astronomical. HIs health insurance covered 30 days of outpatient therapy. Doug will likely need at least a year of outpatient therapy to continue healing. His insurance benefits have been dropped, so now Amy must shoulder the costs of the COBRA benefits (more than $2200 per month) to keep health insurance for him and the family.
This GoFundMe is specifically for medical costs that the Byrums incur as Doug recovers from his injuries. If Doug were to go to therapy just two times per week, that would be 104 outpatient appointments. If we estimate very low--$300 per visit--that is $31,200 in a year.
Doug prepared well for a crisis, as he purchased disability insurance that will help pay living expenses so that Amy can continue to be primary caregiver and not have to get a job yet. The family can manage financially. Frankly, Doug's care has required 24/7 supervision, so working would be impossible. And hopefully insurance benefits will cover most of the three months in the hospital and three surgeries.
Funds from this GoFundMe would ensure that the family would stay afloat despite the massive medical costs of ongoing therapy.
