Please read: hope for Alone

I know you see many gofundme requests. I’m asking that you read this one, and donate or share if you are comfortable.

There’s a community member I’ve known for 7 years who is now in a very disheartening situation. I’m intentionally not mentioning specific details in order to protect her vulnerable state.

A previously vivacious and independent person, who has historically helped others and advocated for many, is now in need of our help.

She grew up homeless without reliable family, got an education, and spent many years working in the medical field. Overcoming numerous obstacles, she achieved a responsible and stable living— all the while helping countless others who were themselves close to ruin.

Then the unthinkable happened: a genetic disease has rapidly changed the course of her life. This irreversible disease attacks the body and comes with a high degree of challenges and constant pain. What previously would have been a standard day (go to work, exercise, volunteer) is now reduced to a new, limited reality which requires major exertion to do even basic tasks we take for granted.

As if the disease progression wasn’t enough, she has been abandoned by her spouse during this time. “Alone” is a word that doesn’t quite capture the magnitude of her situation.

Now confined to a wheelchair and with no family, she continues to live with determination. It pains me to think of anyone going through something like this alone. I’m hoping to help her with the fundamentals: costs associated with housing, wheelchair repair, and accessibility aids.
