On October 30th, my dad was in a horrific accident that completely changed our lives. He was driving his semi when he hit and took out an overpass in Blackfoot Idaho going 70 mph and was ejected through the windshield. The impact was so severe that it’s a miracle he even survived.

My dad suffered devastating injuries — he broke his neck and back, shattered his hip and pelvis, and completely crushed his rib cage, which had to be reconstructed in surgery. He’s literally iron man (titanium metal to be specific). He also suffered a horrific head injury, leaving him scalped on the left side with staples running from his forehead all the way to the back of his head, exceeding past the occipital bone on his skull.

He was on life support for six days, and those were the longest, scariest days of our lives. By the grace of God, he made it through — but he still has such a long road ahead of him in recovery.

So far, he’s had:

• Spinal surgery on his neck

• Chest surgery to rebuild his rib cage and repair his lung

• Two hip surgeries to reattach and repair his hip at the ball joint and pelvis

He’s still facing more spinal surgeries in the near future, but right now doctors are trying to let his body heal from the four surgeries he’s already endured.

They estimate he’ll need to be in the hospital for at least three months, and even after that, he’ll need home health care and intensive physical therapy just to be able to walk and get around again properly. My dad has always been the strongest, hardest-working man I know — he’s a truck driver who’s spent his life providing for his family. Seeing him like this is absolutely heartbreaking, but we’re holding on to faith and hope every single day. God has definitely been watching over him.

The medical bills, therapy costs, and everything that comes with long-term recovery are overwhelming.
