I have learned so many life-changing lessons these past three years of growth, but none more important than embracing the power of being vulnerable. I’m asking for your help.

I was four years old when I told my family that my name was Justin and I was a boy. At the time, it was unfathomable for me to be trans, even to myself. I spent the next 33 years doing what we all do, navigating how to be myself, be liked, and feel safe. Fortunately, I found joy, community, and pride in my identity as a lesbian and later as a butch lesbian.

It wasn’t until I became a parent that my truth unfolded again, this time with more experience trusting my intuition. Parenthood called me forward and made me want to show up as the best and truest version of myself. Parenting and the pandemic strengthened my clarity on my values and weakened my desire to please others to seek safety.

Deep down, I knew I had been running hard and fast away from being “trans” for a long time. I knew the world preferred me as Jeannie because, for the body I was born with, femininity is most desired, respected, and understood. Masculinity for a body like mine can be threatening, repulsive, and can even be the cause of violence.

Today, increased social media visibility and society’s challenging of gender norms created the space to question whether girls and boys need to wear only pink or blue, respectively, anyway. When it comes to being myself, the time is clearly now. I’m grateful that when it comes to my trans identity, I work for the BEST employer, live in the BEST city, in the BEST state, with the most AMAZING friends, family and partner. My experience coming out as Jordan this past year has been nothing short of a fairytale. Thank you so much for being on my team during the scariest and most genuine journey of my life.

Alas, amidst all the good, we are at a new apex of transphobia. Trans-affirming care is new, and as you can imagine, our broader healthcare and insurance systems haven’t caught up yet. It has humbled me to realize that without support from my community, the most capable top surgeons are out of reach financially and with them, the chest I've always wanted. My surgeon’s fees are $12,000 + $2,500 for hospital expenses. I am asking for your support in this pivotal moment of my life.
