Like many of you, during lockdown I’ve spent a lot less on coffee, socks and shaving gel. I thought I would put that money to good use and in some way help close the digital divide.
Simon Howatson is an enterprising young man running digital start-ups in Sunderland. One of the things he does – through Rebuyer - is take old kit from businesses like ours, refurbish it and sell it on. Simon has a heart of gold - it took him less than 10 seconds to agree to lend his support. Geoffrey Burns of business telecoms specialist work Nice Network, was also eager to get on-board and managed to secure some great support from his partners, including Vodafone.
Here’s the deal... We’ve got a dedicated Head Teacher from one of the most economically challenged parts of Sunderland. We’ve got 50 children in desperate need of a chance. We’ve got 50 refurbished machines ready to go at just £40 a pop. We’ve got 6 months unlimited data for all 50 kids. We just need to fund the machines. The money I saved will buy half of them. Geoffrey has agreed to buy 10. I’m hoping there are 15 generous people in my network who will chip in £40 each and help us to seal the deal.
